Mel also worked with Dr. Brent Bills annual 4th of July presentation in Sinks Canyon, Wyoming, orchestrating the music and timing of the fireworks. Funeral services for Ruth Juanita Bean, 89, West Plains, Missouri, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Calvary Pentecostal Tabernacle, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bean passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born September 15, 1934, at West Plains, Missouri, to Thomas William Driscoll and Anna Courtney Hard Driscoll. On October 24, 1953, she was married at Bakersfield, Missouri to Joe Bean. Juanita’s love story was shared many, many times. But it’s not every day the Lord speaks to someone to let them know who they are marrying. It was truly a match made in Heaven. Juanita and Joe lived a fulfilling, happy life together for 70 years. Up until her last moments, they were holding each other’s hands. Juanita had many passions: cooking, growing flowers, decorating cakes, macramé, embroidering, quilting, reading, CB radioing to name a few, but her biggest passion was entertaining. She was the best hostess! You never left her house hungry or unloved! Many family members, Pastors, preachers, missionaries, strangers that Joe would bring home from town, and old friends and young people sat at her table. Her home on Old 160 was called “Grand Central Station” when her children were young adults. Her passion for people and entertaining remained stable even when her mind became unstable. Her biggest smiles came when her own children were in her presence. Each child thought they were her “favorite” for the special attention she managed to show each one. Juanita’s favorite day was Sunday, not because it was a “day off work”, but it was a full day of having her family around her, worshiping together, eating together, and sometimes taking Sunday drives. In the last few years of her life, every day was Sunday. So Sunday, her funeral day, is so fitting. Juanita’s humor will be missed. She was always trying to make people laugh. Her humor will live on in the stories that her Grands will be telling for years to come. Juanita loved family, mainly her Driscoll and Bean families. In the last few years of her life, everyday she would ask about her Mother and Dad and siblings. She longed to go “home” everyday. Now she’s Home forever!
She is survived by her husband, Joe Bean, of the family home; four children, Mike Bean and wife, Paula, Princeton, Indiana, Tami Riggs and husband, Ray, West Plains, Tim Bean and wife, Judy, Jefferson City, Missouri and John Bean and wife, Daralena, Springfield, Missouri; one son-in-law, David Johnston; twelve grandchildren, Johnana Nieblas and husband, Dominic, Dyer, Indiana, Kristen Cochran and husband, Colin, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Bracy Bean and wife, Briana, Springfield, Missouri, Tabitha Riggs Miller and husband, Anson, West Plains, Courtney Johnston, West Plains, Nathanael Bean and wife, Hailey, Joplin, Missouri, James Martin Bean and wife, Britney, West Plains, Dara Thomas and husband, James, Springfield, Missouri, Dale Bean and wife, Ellyn, Springfield, Missouri, Daine Bean and wife, Ashley, Blue Springs, Missouri, Danae Cooledge and husband, Nathan, Gravenhurst Ontario, Canada and Dessa Godla and husband, Kevin, Springfield, Missouri; twenty-five great-grandchildren, Eli, Jude and Isla Nieblas, CJ, Benny and Gabriel Cochran, Juliette, Evie and Olivia Bean, Lucas, Liam and Lance Miller, Colter and Quinn Bean, Cheyanne Bean, Winston, Laith and Elias Thomas, Hudson and Addelyn Bean, Jack, Maisy and August Jo Bean, Zimri Cooledge, Eloise Godla with another Godla baby boy on the way; one brother, Lloyd (Jim) Driscoll and wife, Delores, West Plains; two sisters, Thelma Willard Montgomery and husband, Paul, West Plains and Mary Toney, Marion, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Laura Driscoll, Columbus, Maryland; and many nieces and nephews.

At the age of 88, Robert Tapscott of West Plains, Missouri, ended his earthly journey and went home to Jesus on January 22, 2024.
He was born on the Fourth of July, 1935 to Margaret and Farrell Tapscott of Trenton, Missouri. After graduating from Trenton High School, where he was co-captain of the football team, he married the love of his life, Evelyn Holt, on Christmas Day 1953. The couple celebrated 70 years together last Christmas. They each would always say the other was the best gift they have ever received.
Robert was a loving father to four daughters and sons-in-law: Diana and Brian Groe of West Plains, Missouri; Cindy and Warren Christophersen of Ogallala, Nebraska; Linda and Rick Renteria of Keystone, South Dakota; and Jennifer and Justin Cropper of North Platte, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. They praise God that they have never buried a child.
Robert worked on the railroad for 42 years, ending his career as an engineer with the Burlington Northern in Sheridan, Wyoming. He loved his job, loved the romance of the rails, loved seeing the aurora borealis on cold winter nights or the fields ripe for harvest as summer days turned to autumn. He always took reading material in case he had to wait in a siding—the Book of Rules, so he could study for the frequent tests he had to take to keep railroading, and his Bible. He often used the long runs over the road to share his faith with his co-workers, and more than a few came to know the Savior. One man called him 20 years after the fact to thank Robert for telling him about the Lord. Even though he didn’t come to faith when Robert worked with him, the seeds had been planted and he found Jesus later.
Robert was adventurous and well-traveled. He earned his private pilot’s license and had a Cessna 152 and later, a Piper Warrior which he and Evelyn enjoyed flying over the sandhills of Nebraska and back to Missouri to visit family. He took his wife and daughters on numerous camping trips throughout the American West. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Missouri Tigers fan and always said, with hope in his heart, that each game was “gonna be a good game!” He was also a 32nd degree Mason, though one of his granddaughters thought the “G” on his Masonic ring stood for “Grandpa.”
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Shirley Trainer, his brother Rick Tapscott, and his brother-in-law Charles Holt.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and all his children and grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Doris Tapscott of Franklin, Tennessee; his brother-in-law Thomas Trainer of Oskaloosa, Iowa; his sister-in-law Barb Tapscott of Des Moines, Iowa; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and Mary Holt of Trenton, Missouri, his sister-in-law, Pat Holt of Des Moines, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In the last days of his life, Robert’s attitude was one of total gratitude for all the blessings he’d experienced and the length of days he’d been granted. He was ready and excited to meet his Savior. But his family and friends will miss him sorely until we are reunited in that land where God will wipe away all tears. There will be a graveside service in Trenton, MO at a later date.
Arrangements under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.

Betty Anne Bale, 88, West Plains, Missouri, passed from this life peacefully at her home on January 22, 2024.
She was born October 14, 1935, at Hanford, California, to Francis and Frank Padilla. Betty was raised in California and, shortly after high school, she met and married the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Bale. The couple resided in California for sixteen years before moving to Chuck’s native Missouri to settle in West Plains in 1971. Together, they raised four children and enjoyed more than fifty years of marriage. While their children were young, Betty was a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed the handcrafted arts and took classes in sewing, ceramics, and cross-stitch. She loved travel as well, which she and her husband, Chuck, did often throughout their marriage. Betty was an avid reader. If her Nook quit working, her grandchildren were immediately called upon to fix it. Regardless of what activity she was enjoying, faith and family have always been her foundation. Faith and family have always been the foundation of Betty’s life. At an early age, Betty was active in the Baptist church. She shared her faith with family and friends in the life that she led. When Betty and Chuck relocated their family to West Plains, Betty was a familiar face at Wal-Mart, where she worked for many years. Later in her life, Betty’s sweet and loving spirit touched many young lives, caring for children in her home. She catered to the unique needs of each child, as if they were her own. Her home provided a warm, nurturing environment that inspired creativity, self-confidence, personal growth, and, most of all, fun! Strong bonds were formed with these children and their parents, which would last throughout the remainder of Betty’s life. Another treasured bond Betty enjoyed was with her furry and loyal companion of fifteen years, her Shih Tzu, Suzie. Some might say the dog’s devoted and feisty spirit reflected Betty’s own. Of course, Betty’s greatest passion was the special connection she shared with her grandchildren. She was the happiest in their company and cherished every moment with them.
Survivors include one son, Daniel Bale; two daughters, Lorerinda Budd and husband, William, and Cheryl Callahan and husband, John; six grandchildren, Kristy Sims, John Ryan Callahan and wife, Madyson, Brianna Callahan, Denise Bale, September Bale, and James Bale; one great-grandson, William Gage Sims; sister-in-law, Barbara Baker; brother-in-law, Gordon Andrews; and nieces, Karen, Kristen, a very special niece Teresa, Andrea, Lori, Carrie, Sheri, and Tina.

Funeral services for Tina Marie Grayham, 51, Henderson, Arkansas, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 25, 2024, at First Baptist Church, Bakersfield, Missouri, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mrs. Grayham passed away peacefully January 16, 2024, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born May 31, 1972 in Fort Benning Georgia, the youngest child and only daughter of Darrell and Shirley Belt. She grew up as an army brat, until the family settled back in the Bakersfield, Missouri area in 1982. She was quick to say she was a daddy’s girl. Her two older brothers are probably partially responsible for her toughness, while she inherited some of her doting over her kids from her mom. She graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1990 and worked at the Hitchin’ Post Cafe in Caulfield for many years, forming many close friendships in that time. On December 27 1990, she married Ronnie Grayham, the love of her life. Her true calling in life was realized with the birth of her children, Whitney Marie and Jacob Hunter. Devoted isn’t a strong enough word to describe her as a mother. She dedicated her life to her children, being involved in every school activity and sporting event they endeavored. The family’s dedication to one another would later be strengthened further by the formation of the family farm, where they worked side by side. Tina loved the farm life and all of her animals. She had a natural nurturing heart. Her first grandbaby, Titus, was born just a few short weeks ago, and we know she would have been the best MawMaw ever, if given the chance. Tina did not light up every room when she walked into it. She would have rolled her eyes if you said she did. What she did do was liven up every room she walked into. She was a force. She was authentic. She faced life, and even cancer, head on. She was a fighter until the end. The sorrow felt by her passing is surpassed by the blessings to have known and loved her. She was a Christian and was baptized with her family on July 26, 2009, and we look forward to a sweet reunion one day.
Tina is survived by her husband, Ronnie Grayham; her daughter, Whitney Grayham; her son, Jacob Grayham and his wife Mariah; her grandson, Titus Grayham; her mother, Shirley Belt; two brothers, John Belt and wife, Tabitha and Rocky Belt and wife, Vicki; aunt, Linda and her husband Kevin Walker; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and her dear friends, Amy Ingalsbe and Kari Belt.
Visitation services will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Burial will be at Bakersfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society and may be left at or mailed to Robertson-Drago Funeral Home, 211 West Main, West Plains, MO 65775.
A memorial service for Sherry Lynn Johnson, 72, West Plains, Missouri, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at the Langston Street Chapel of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home, where stories will be told, tears will be shed, and laughter will echo – just the way Sherry would have wanted.
On April 9, 1951, Kansas City, Missouri, was graced with a bundle of joy named Sherry Lynn Herbolsheimer. From the moment she arrived, it was clear that Sherry was destined to spread laughter, love, and a little bit of mischief. Sherry embarked on her final adventure on January 16, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her.
Sherry’s early years in Kansas City were brief, as the Herbolshiemer clan moved to the family farm in Koshkonong. It was here, amidst the rolling hills and open skies, that Sherry’s vibrant spirit took root. September of 1968 marked the beginning of her journey with husband James Johnson of West Plains. Together, they welcomed two sons into the world and a lifetime of memories. For over 35 years, Sherry was the heart and soul of Eaton/Invensys in West Plains. She wasn’t just an employee; she was a friend, confidante, and occasionally the office prankster. After bidding farewell to her office desk, Sherry wasn’t one to sit still. She found joy in working for Ready Transportation, where she made it her mission to brighten the days of those she drove to their appointments. Sherry’s ability to turn a mundane car ride into a laughter-filled journey was nothing short of magical. Sherry’s home was her sanctuary, where she enjoyed college basketball, movies, and quality time with her beloved dog, Stella. Sundays were sacred for Sherry, filled with laughter and love at Brandsville with Uncle Junior, Aunt Shirley, and a gaggle of cousins. Family reunions were her specialty – she was the glue that held the family together, always ensuring everyone was fed and happy. At the reunions, Sherry was also the person who could tell you how exactly all these people you had never met were related to you. Known affectionately as “Mamaw” not just to her own grandkids but to their friends as well, Sherry had the uncanny ability to make everyone feel special. Whether it was through a well-timed joke, a comforting smile, or just lending an ear, she was there for them. A devout Christian, Sherry was a proud member of the Koshkonong Frewill Baptist Church. Her faith was as unwavering as her sense of humor. Sherry leaves behind a world that is a little less bright without her in it. A firecracker in her own right, Sherry never met a stranger and never backed down from a fight – especially if it was in defense of her loved ones. Her younger days saw her as an athlete, with a mean serve in volleyball and a swing in softball that could send the ball into next week. Her absence leaves a void that can never quite be filled, but her spirit will continue to inspire laughter, courage, and love in all who knew her. Sherry Lynn Herbolshiemer Johnson, you were one of a kind, and the world is all the richer for having had you in it.
She is survived by husband James, her son, Brian Johnson, and his wife, Shelly, of West Plains; her son, Brad Johnson of West Plains. Grandchildren Colten Johnson and his wife, Bailey; Cassidy Denton and her husband, James; Camryn Johnson; and Briar Johnson, all of West Plains. Great-granddaughter, Espy Tae Denton; one sister, Diana Davis, and her husband, Bud, of Orlando, Florida. Nephew Chris Herbolsheimer and his wife Sylvia of West Plains; niece Jackie Burgess and her husband, Kenneth, of West Plains; nephew, Kevin Davis, and his wife Crystal of Huntington, Maryland; and nephew Kris Davis and his wife, Mika of Orlando, Florida. James “Jim Sr.” Harvey Jolliff passed away at his home in West Plains, Missouri on January 11, 2024, at the age of 87 after a life wonderfully lived in a world well-traveled. He was born on July 4, 1936, to Cecil and Mattie Sharp Jolliff within their home in West Plains. Official records list his year of birth as 1937 due to the physician forgetting to submit his birth certificate until the next year. This filing error later led to his mother needing to sign her permission for him to join the U.S. Naval Academy in 1955 to begin basic training. He also trained as a Hospital Corpsman, which led to him working as a Surgical Ward Corpsman at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA in 1956. After which he continued to serve as a Navy Hospital Corpsman 1st Class until the year 1962.
In the year 1959, he married “the love of my life, Patricia Anne Duggan” on May 30th. Together they had three sons, Jim Jr., Mark, and Ty. He believed without doubt in the Lord’s unfailing love and mercy and placed all hope in Him. Because of this, he had a strong commitment to his love for his family. He was a husband, father, and grandfather and never failed to love us all with tenderness, patience, and intention. We knew without fail that he would be there supporting us through every accomplishment in our lives, and that he was a safe place to come rest our hardships and worries. He was so incredibly proud of his three boys and his favorite way to spend his time was with them, being involved in every aspect of their lives. Jim Sr. and Pat recently celebrated 64 years of marriage. A few years back he wrote, “she has stuck by me and supported me throughout all of our ventures in life, she is my rock and has been for 59 years”. Their continued love and devotion to each other is an inspiration to the whole family.
He valued education and during his life graduated from the Masters in Elementary and Secondary Education Program with his PhD, completed a Doctorate degree in Education and Curriculum Development, and developed the first State/Federal Special Education Compliance Plan. His passion was teaching, and one of the things that he loved to share most with his students was his love of aviation through field trips to the West Plains Regional Airport and Salem, Arkansas Airport, where he would have his Cessna aircraft ready and waiting. He treasured every single one of his students in his 58 years within the education system.
Greeted in Heaven with open arms by his loving parents, Cecil and Mattie Jolliff, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tom and Billie Duggan, his older brother, Bob Jolliff, and younger sister, Barbara Jolliff Cook, her husband Jim Cook, nephew Mike Cook, and sister-in-law Linda Duggan.
He is survived in life by his beloved wife, Pat Jolliff; and their three adult children Jim Jolliff, Jr. and wife Teresa, Mark Jolliff and wife Tina, Ty Jolliff and wife Melynni; his grandchildren, Chad Jolliff and wife Taylor, Nathan Jolliff and wife Jessica, Kelsey Jolliff Roe and husband James, Logan Jolliff and wife Ashley; his great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Rhilyn, Reed, Grayson, Tristan, Nola, Logan, and Arthur; his many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors that he loved and considered family.
He asked that there not be a funeral, but on a later date when there is a beautiful day for his family to gather to celebrate his life together as the great grandchildren run and play and he watches over us all.
Before he passed, he asked us to express his thankfulness to the town of West Plains and the community that he felt so blessed to be a part of; the Richards School District, West Plains R-7 School District, Southwest Missouri State University, Howell Valley School, and all the other school systems within the area and state. He cherished every moment working side by side with all of you and had so many wonderful stories to share. To all his students, you brought so much joy to his life. To this year, he could still remember the name of every single one of you. The Aircraft Owners Pilot Association and West Plains Regional Airport, he was so thankful for all the memories you made together sharing in your love of aviation. He looked forward to his monthly meetings with his classmates where all of you would gather to reminisce and catch up with each other’s lives. To the Valley View Community Church, he felt beyond blessed to be a part of your congregation. He loved worshipping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with everyone there. To the kind-hearted doctors and nurses within our community; from the depths of our hearts we thank you all for giving such care and attention to him. He had the utmost respect for you all.
High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
