The story of Phillip James Brucks, better known as Pastor Phil:

I was born and raised in St. Louis, my father, Charles Franklin Brucks, a mechanic, and my mother, Allah Louise Utnage Brucks, a devoted 1950s housewife, climbed a tall flight of stairs to a small 2nd floor flat in the city. This is where my story began. Before long, my three sisters — Carol Brucks Gettemeier, Elizabeth Brucks McGowan, and Katherine Brucks Messmer, lovingly known as “the Tupperware baby” — completed our family, and we moved to a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home in the suburb of Bellefontaine Neighbors. My high school years were filled with Motown music, playing tuba in the marching band, confirmation classes, youth group, soccer, and a part-time job pumping gas. In August of 1970, I moved away to attend Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri. I didn’t realize it then, but God placed me there for a reason, and her name was Dorothy June Drago of West Plains, Missouri, a music major. For more than 54 years I told her, “You are beautiful. When I saw you walk across campus, you took my breath away — and you still do.” On my last day in the hospital, when I told her that one final time, we were both blessed. I could tell you many stories from my 73 years — my career in sales, church leadership, serving as a lay speaker, coaching soccer,

pastoral ministry and leading Bible studies — but the most meaningful roles of my life were that of husband and father. Charles Nicholas Brucks and Matthew James Brucks: I am so very thankful for the fine men you have become. You love others well, and it brings me great joy to watch you as fathers yourselves. Nick and Abbie Sandifer Brucks have two beautiful and kind daughters, Reagan and Charlotte. Matt and Katie Hansen Brucks have two handsome and bright young boys, Finley and Brody. To our sons, I say thank you for loving your momma through this next part of her journey.

“Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.”

(“Here I Am, Lord” by Dan Schutte, 1981)

When I answered God’s call into full-time ministry, those were the words I held onto. In my life on earth my hope was to know the Lord and to do His will, but even more importantly, I wanted others to know Him too. Often, I would pray for you and people that I would meet asking God to help you deepen your relationship with Jesus. And to know that HE loves you completely and longs for you to accept Him into your heart as your Savior. My one last request of those reading my story is, be in fellowship with others, be real and open with your concerns and joys. Connections like that will help your faith grow and encourage others. And as you listen for your calling, hear what God is saying to you and follow Him.
