Graveside services for Thelma Mahan, 95, West Plains, Missouri, will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Oak Lawn Cemetery, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mahan passed away at 2:24 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2012, at her home with her son by her side. She was born December 18, 1916, at Elizabeth, Arkansas, to Henry Alvin and Laura Ethel Cantrell Young. She was the 2 nd oldest of fourteen children. On October 8, 1938, she was married at West Plains, Missouri, to Clarence Leroy "Chauncey" Mahan, who preceded her in death on January 27, 1988. Thelma and Chauncey had several restaurants in West Plains until 1954 at which time they moved to Kansas City, Missouri for a few years, returning to West Plains in 1959. She worked in the high school cafeteria and was a cook at Stockman's café for many years. Thelma and Chauncey did woodcrafts and made many repousse' pictures that they sold at flea markets. She enjoyed quilting and gardening, but her greatest joy was cooking and caring for her large extended family. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Mrs. Mahan was a member of First Baptist Church.
Those left to honor her memory include her son, James LeRoy Mahan, wife, Chris Jamason, Hiawatha, Iowa; granddaughters, Susan Mahan Tyrrell, husband, Kevin, Hiawatha, Iowa and Sharon Mahan Blanton, Kansas City, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Brandon Tyrrell, Travis Tyrrell, wife, Joni, Rebecca Tyrrell Kuntz, husband, Josh, Breanna Tyrrell Reed, husband, Dan, Addie Mefford, Caleb Mahan and Austin Mahan; great-great-grandchildren, Annika and Bella Withrow; brothers and sister, Cecil Young, wife, Norma, Winifred Krug, husband, Carl, Bill Young, wife Audry, Odell Young, Donald Ray Young, wife, Sue and Bobby Young, wife, Betty; former daughter-in-law, Carole Sayre; grandson-in-law, Mike Anderson; numerous nieces and nephews; and special neighbors, Kim and Jonathan Smith and Mrs. Lora Massey and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters, Forest Elmo Young, Eunice Martin, Willie Bea Cole, Mary Irene Mesiano, Arcille Pauline Coscia, G. W. Young and Gaylon David Young.
Mrs. Mahan will lie in state from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Monday, June 4, 2012, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Riverways Hospice, and may be left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Thelma was very grateful for the caring staff of Riverways Hospice; with their help she was able to do it her way.
