    For Sergio

We met our dear friend Sergio Navarrete many years ago in West Plains, MO through some friends at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At the time his son Emilio was 3. As months unfolded into years we developed a friendship with them, sharing our respective young families’ holidays, gatherings. He brought smiles and laughter to Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s and so forth. Sergio was an enthusiastic story teller. His eyes twinkled and he smiled as he recounted to us his childhood with his parents and brother Oscar in Columbia, military service, living in Tacoma, Washington, and relocating to West Plains, MO. The journey was a long but interesting one, whether describing how to prepare plantains or listening to the Latin Jazz king Tito Puentes (“Oye Como Va”).

Sergio had a strong love , respect, and pride for his son Emilio: he appreciated his son’s talents at soccer, singing in the concert choir, and, enabling Emilio to go overseas to sing in the choir. Sergio had a strong love of Jesus Christ and the Blessed Mother.

Our dear friend liked to get involved with outside projects, to help or “supervise”. We had a large tree that fell over on our property and Sergio was present to help. Likewise, birthdays, special occasions we usually shared with Sergio and the “vibrations” were typically good ones.

When dark clouds came over him a few years ago, we prayed for Sergio. The last time we saw him in person was in 2019 at a restaurant in West Plains where Sherry joined us. We learned of his medical struggles through his future wife Sherry and was able to call him, thankfully, and facetime when possible. Also thankfully Sergio had friends and those who cared about him sincerely through those months. We pray that his son Emilio and wife and children find peace in the good memories they have of Sergio and that his wife Sherry may continue her life with renewed strength and gratitude for the time her and Sergio shared together.

Sergio, we love you and miss you. We believe that you are at rest in the multiverse with your ancestors and angels, in a place of serenity and enlightenment. You were part of our lives thankfully for many years, and, you will not be forgotten. Ever.

    Love always,

    Mark, Dawn, and Elijah Johnson
