    I hardly knew you,
    And only from afar;
    Yet, in my mind’s eye,
    I am proud of who you were,
    Godfather, uncle, and hero.

    Colonel Alter was an inspiration to many of us during his years as a high school ROTC instructor. He was an early volunteer during World War II. As an aviation cadet at Stockton, CA, he watched Jimmy Doolittle and his B-25 group make what was probably their last practice takeoff before boarding the aircraft carrier Hornet. A few months later he was in the South Pacific as a Army Air Force pilot flying off aircraft carriers himself. He remained in the Pacific theater throughout the conflict. Bob loved his country, his family and his faith. It is my prayer that his family is comforted by the memories of his wonderful life.
