I was friends with Julia Gatewood, who is also gone now. MJ had been one of Julia’s husband, Moody’s caregivers at the end of his life. I met MJ at Moody’s funeral and liked her immediately. Christos House Thrift Store was one of my regular stops, and I always looked forward to seeing her; I loved her voice and her smile, and always felt better after our short visits there. After Moody died, MJ and I made a tentative plan to get together with Julia, but never did. Now she and two of them are together, smiling down on the rest of us. I can’t believe she’s gone so soon (she’s 3 years younger than me) and I will miss her terribly. Wayne, I met you a couple times; I’m the one whose great-great grandfather was Peter Carroll, who came to Howell Co from the Carolinas and homesteaded land near South Fork. I send my deepest sympathy. Jude Duffell

MJ was a wonderful nurse and caregiver for my father, Moody, in his last years. MJ would prepared meals for Dad which he enjoyed when others couldn’t interest his appetite. Joking and teasing Dad brought smiles to his face and MJ was a master at that. MJ knew how to massage sore, stiff muscles to give Dad relief because exercise was too difficult. MJ’s enthusiasm and bright spirit gave my mom a lift at the perfect moments and I so enjoyed her company when I visited my folks. MJ will be missed by many including me, in California.
